Microsoft Says Bigger is Better With Surface Pro 3

Contrary to industry expectations Microsoft did not reveal a small tablet at its 20 May "small gathering"-- it instead announced the Surface Pro 3, a device large enough to be more laptop than tablet.

In fact the Surface Pro 3 is 12-inch device, up from the 10.6-inch of the previous model, with a 2160 x 1440 ClearType display. It is also relatively slim (7.6mm) and light (800g), at least when compared with ultralight laptops. Such comparisons are apt, since Microsoft itself describes the device as a "revolutionary laptop" (not "iPad killer") when paired with the companion Type Cover keyboard/cover.

Microsoft also offers a desktop dock accessory for use with full-on PC peripherals.

“Tablets are designed for you to sit back and watch movies, read books, browse the web, snacking on apps,” Microsoft says. “Laptops are not designed that way at all… They’re designed for editing, they’re designed for making. There’s a design point, and they’re made that way for a reason.”

The tablet trio runs on Android and features proprietary LG UX features such as QPair 2.0 (allows users to connect devices to Android smartphones) and Knock Code (unlocks devices via personalised "knock" pattern).

What Next for Microsoft's Surface?

Microsoft invites the press for a 20 May Surface-related event, and the grapevine immediately hints on what the event will actually involve with rumours of a smaller version of the tablet.

After all, the invitation describes the event as "a small gathering"-- a possible reference to not the size of the press-only audience but that of the device in question.

Bloomerg is one top source for Surface rumours, with anonymous sources claiming the event will feature multiple Surface models running on Intel and Qualcomm hardware.

Such news would bring a blow to Nvidia, whose Tegra chips power the Windows RT Surface variant.

DigiTimes: HTC To Make Google Tablet

HTC is the company Google has turned to in the search for the next Nexus tablet maker DigiTimes reports, as the search giant is reportedly dropping previous Nexus 7 producer Asus.

If the news source is correct the next Nexus tablet will be an 8-inch number, and should launch sometime on Q3 2014.

Apparently Asus "has not been as aggressive" over making the 3rd Nexus generation-- the reason being Google restrictions over the development of the device.

HTC has already worked with Google on the first Nexus smartphone, 2010's imaginatively named Nexus One.

Retailers Find Low-Cost Tablet Success

Non-CE retailers find success with own-brand low-cost tablets-- Tesco says its Hudl tablet sold well enough to merit a sequel, while Aldi recently relaunched the sold out Lifetab tablet.

Tesco launched the first Hudl back in September 2013. A Kindle Fire-esque 7-inch number with budget specs (including a 1.5GHz CPU and a 1440x900 display), Tesco says fiscal 2013 sales total 500000 units.

"It was recently named winner of the "ReThink Retail Technology Initiative of the Year" and we plan to launch a second device later this year," the retailer remarks in its 2013-2014 results report.

While some Tesco outlets carry the Hudl and some CE items, the retailer officially retired from computing sale back in August 2013.
