Samsung Crams 512GB in Stamp-Size SSD

Samsung starts mass production of a NVMe PCIe SSD in a single ball grid (SBG) form factor-- the PM971-NVMe, fiting up to 512GB of storage in a chip the size of a postage stamp.

For those wanting specifics, the chip crams all related components (namely x16 V-NAND flash chips, controller and 4Gb LPDDR4 RAM) in a package measuring 20 x 16x 1.5mm and weighing just 1g. However, while being small, the chip promises performance matching larger equivalents, with read speeds reaching 1.5GBps, write speeds of 800MBps and random read and write IOPS clocking at 109K and 150K respectively.

WD Claims Fastest 256GB microSD Card

Western Digital claims the 256GB SanDisk Extreme microSDXC UHS-I card is the fastest microSD card in its class, making it ideal for 4K video recording.

According to the company the card holds up to "14 hours of 4K UD video," while transfer speeds of up to 100MB/s make easy work of transferring large files to PCs. Write speeds are also speedy at 90MB/s.

Also launched by WD is a slightly slower card-- the SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card Premium Edition. Described as a 256GB card optimised for mainstream consumers, it offers maximum transfer speeds of 95MB/s and enough space for over 24 hours of HD video.

Samsung launches what it claims is the highest capacity microSD card (in its class)-- the EVO Plus 256GB, packed with 3D V-NAND to provide more storage for mobile devices, drones and 360-degree video recorders.

According to the company the card holds up to 12 hours of 4K/UHD video or 33 hours of HD video. Read and write speeds reach up to 95MB/s and 90MB/s respectively, while the card is IEC60529, IPX7 certified waterproof and can withstand x-rays and magnetic fields.

German storage vendor brinell presents what it describes as a classier take on the external HDD-- the SSD EVO, a compact device featuring "uncompromisingly clear contours" and "exceptional materials."

The brinell EVO SSDs come in rounded housing and fancy materials, including soft nappa leather (in black, brown or white), stainless steel, faux-carbon and Makassar ebony. All materials include a glossy metal frame, while cables are built into the casing.

Inside the drives are Samsung EVO SSDs with read/write speeds reaching up to 420MB/s via USB 3.0 connection.

The Power Company promises a solution for customers wanting to backup, transfer and stream files across all devices with the Flex-Card, a device compatible with different platforms without need for a cloud-based system.

To do so, the portable (55x60mm) storage device features two flexible cables and multiple connectors-- namely USB 3.0, micro USB, Lightning, Apple 30-pin and even USB-C. The result is platform-agnostic storage usable with Android, iOS, Windows and Mac devices, without need for an internet connection.

"With all the problems people have experienced with the cloud and browser-based storage, the Flex-Card should make technology users feel more secure by not utilizing an Internet connection," the Power Company claims.

Seagate launches the Wireless at CES 2015-- a 500GB portable wireless (hence the name) drive the company says is designed to provide further storage the users of all mobile devices.

It is compatible with all iDevices, as well as Android and Windows 8/RT smartphones and tablets, via companion Media app. Setup simply involves connecting devices to the drive via wifi. Once connected it also handles the sharing on content on smart TVs and STBs over Apple Airplay or the Google Chromecast.

Seagate adds the Media app also includes an auto backup feature for the creation of secondary copies of photos and videos, while the drive's battery lasts for up to 6 hours on a single charge.
