Microsoft Returns to CES

One company is reportedly coming back to CES 2014-- Microsoft, whose final major appearance at the Las Vegas event was back in 2012 led declarations of "the beginning of the end" of the show from at least some pundits.

The news comes via BBC interview with CEA president Gary Shapiro, who says "Microsoft is officially back in the International CES... They are taking out significant space in meeting rooms-- it's actually a larger presence than I believe they have ever had."

Shapiro continues "we have had a tremendous partnership [with Microsoft] going back to the very beginning. You know, we had one little blip this year... but now we're happy to have them back with a physical presence."

IFA Berlin Fills Venue for 2012 (Already)

IFA Berlin is already sold out. More companies have submitted applications for space than space exists, says Dr. Christian Goeke, COO, Messe Berlin (photo top left).

Until the new Hall 15 goes up in 2015, IFA will be a show filled to its limit...and then some as the organizer looks for temporary solutions to accommodate. That’s 140,000 sqm of exhibits plus whatever extra space can be shoe-horned into IFA by using outdoor tents and other temporary buildings.

Part of the pressure comes from the growing number of Asian exhibitors. The more robust appliance business also clamours for space. And in consumer electronics, the growth is in mobile devices and accessories as well as the Apple ecosystem.

That's one of the main messages we took from the IFA Global Press Conference in Dubrovnik this year.

But that's not the only message.

Razer's 'Project Fiona' Tablet Gaming PC

This game-changing device is the first tablet in the world designed specifically for portable gaming. CES 2012: Show Time Expectations

The early days of 2012 mean one thing for our industry-- CES, which will kick off on Monday night US time (early Tuesday morning for the rest of us in Europe). What are we to expect from the world's biggest CE-related trade show this time around?

A final Microsoft keynote: Microsoft will be making a final big and expensive CES appearance this year. The Microsoft keynote (something of a CES tradition) will be the 14th and last, as the company prefers to make announcements following its own timeline. It also probably prefers to pay less for CES space, too. What should we see from Microsoft this year? No doubt a mixture of news Windows phones, Windows 8 tablets and XBox-related announcements.

Tablets, Tablets, Tablets: While the current king of tablets won't make an appearance-- Apple doesn't show up at CES-- expect a show floor packed with Android 4.0 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich) devices from vendors including Samsung, Sony, Asus, Motorola and Lenovo. We should also see Windows 8-powered tablets, as well devices carrying Intel processors.
