Withings Intros App-Enabled Thermo

Nokia-owned Withings announces the Thermo-- a wifi-enabled non-intrusive thermometer promising accurate temperature readings together with app-based smarts and the pushing of health data to Apple Health.

The Thermo measures temperatures through what Withings calls "HotSpot" technology using 16 infrared sensors to find the hottest point on the forehead in just 2 seconds. Once it takes a measurement the thermometer authomatically sends data to the Withings Thermo app and Apple Health before providing in-app advice from Thermia, a service run by the Boston Children's Hospital.

The RealSense-Capable Yuneec Drone

How does one beat leader DJI at the drone game? If one is to ask Yuneec, the answer might lie in Intel's RealSense technology as added to the Typhoon H drone.

The hexacopter (since it features 6 motors) uses a RealSense R200 camera to intelligently avoid and navigate around obstacles, thus providing users with more freedom in their aerial photography. The RealSense module also includes downward-facing sensors to improve stability and allow for flights close to the ground with poor GPS reception.

Connected Smarts Reach the Tape Measure

The tape measure may be the last device one might say needs connectivity, yet the Bagel is exactly that-- a "smart" digital tape measure complete with companion app.

The Bagel offers 3 different measuring modes for users wanting to measure, well, everything. String mode is the most familiar mode, with Dyneema string one simply rolls out of the device, analog-style.

The second is Wheel mode, where users simply roll the Bagel around objects on a built-in wheel, while the 3rd Remote mode combines an ultrasonic sensor and a laser pointer to horizontal and vertical distances.

Razer Pushes OSVR at E3 2016

Razer is the next VR headset contender as it shows off an update of the Open Source VR (OSVR) project at E3 2016-- one promising specs comparable to the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive together with a lower price tag.

Co-developed with VR display maker Sensics, the OSVR Hacker Development Kit (HDK) update seen at the show features an overall resolution of 2160x1200 via low-persistence OLED displays with a 90Hz refresh rate and a 110-degree field of view. This is an improvement over earlier prototypes offering a 1920x1080 resolution, and matches the specs of most of the VR competition.

Also included in the headset are custom (not Fresnel) lenses one can adjust to allow for glasses-free use and position tracking via Rift-style IR camera. As the name might suggest the open source nature of the headset allows for some hacking and replacement of parts through modular construction.

Withings Intros Body Cardio Scale

Withings claims to take care of customers' hearts as well as weight with the Body Cardio-- a scale the company says is the first to measure Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) to provide a cardiac health overview.

PWV is the measurement of how fast heartbeat vibration spread across arteries. A faster PWV is a symptom of arterial stiffness caused by problems such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and has strong correlation with risks of stroke, heart attack and other cardiac events.

As expected from such a high-tech health device the Body Cardio pairs with the companion Health mate app via wifi or Bluetooth to provide PWV and heart rate data, as well as other measurements provided by scales such as weight, body mass index (BMI) and body composition, another measurement new to the Body Cardio scale.  In addition the app delivers weight trend information over a time for long-term health-related tracking.

AMD Powers Sulon Q VR/AR Headset

Sulon Technologies is the next company to take on both augmented and virtual reality hardware as it announces the AMD-powered Sulon Q headset at the 2016 Games Developers Conference (GDC).

Described as "the world’s first and only all-in-one, tether-free, “wear and play” headset for virtual reality, augmented reality, and spatial computing," the Sulon Q combines a 2560x1440 resolution OLED display with an AMD FX-8900P processor, Radeon R7 graphics and AstoundSound spatial audio. DJI Intros App-Controlled Phantom 4

Drone maker DJI announces the Phantom 4-- a first "consumer quadcopter camera" from the camera featuring an "Obstacle Sensing System" providing an even easier flying experience.

The obstacle sensing system involves a combination of two front-facing cameras and software allowing the drone to, well, spot and avoid objects. Thus the Phantom 4 can either automatically fly around obstacles or slow down to a hover if it cannot work out an alternative route.

Obstacle avoidance also kicks when users trigger the "Return to Home" function, reducing collision risks when the drone automatically flies back to a take off point. Meanwhile a TapFly function provides an easy means to pilot the drone to a specific destination through simple taps on the companion DJI go app.
