Nest Cam Outdoor Reaches Europe

Nest announces the ruggedised version of the Cam security camera, the Nest Cam Outdoor, will soon reach European markets together with a new Nest app feature dubbed Sightline.

"Sightline is a new app feature that shows you what Nest Cam has seen and lets you speed through days of recorded video in seconds," the company says. "It pulls out key moments automatically so you don’t waste time digging through footage. Looking for the moment someone opened the gate two days ago? No problem."

Through Sightline users can quickly scrub through large amounts of footage, while automatically-generated "key moments" highlight important happenings within the recording. In addition, the feature allows for 3 hours of free video history for all users, even those without a Nest Aware subscription.

Nest Cam Heads Outdoor

The Nest Cam (aka the rebranded Dropcam) was a capable enough security camera, but limited to indoor use. Enter the Nest Cam Outdoor, a version designed for outside use.

As the name might suggest, the Nest Cam Outdoor features a weatherproof casing and more mounting options, including magnetic and screw-on mounts for attachment outside a building. However one has to keep in mind the camera requires constant power via plugging to an outlet.

On the technical side the Nest Cam Outdoor is identical to its inside-only sibling. Video resolution is at 1080p, field of view is 130-degree and 8 IR LEDs allow for night vision powers. Recording happens exclusively on the Nest Aware cloud, with no connection to local DVR available.

CES 2016 Detects Netatmo's Presence

French IoT startup Netatmo follows on last year's face-recognising Welcome camera at CES 2016 with the Presence-- an outdoor security camera able to distinguish between people, animals and cars.

The Camera-Free Security System

The Camera-Free Security System

Customers wary of indoor connected cameras spying on their every daily lives get a camera-free option with Xandem Home, a system using radio waves to monitor the home.

Based on motion-detecting wireless mesh networking technology, Xandem Home promises home security without the blind spots and false alarms found in traditional cameras and motion detectors. The technology essentially creates a "radio-frequency sensing web" across the entire floor plan. Movements affect the radio waves making the web, and algorithms detect and locate the causes of said disturbances, radar-style.

The radio waves travel through walls and furniture, and are generated by nodes users simply plug into wall power outlets. In turn the nodes connect with an internet-connected gateway, making for a fairly simple setup process. The maker adds the gateway integrates with other smart home products, allowing the system to control lights or thermostats, or sound on an alarm in case of break-in.
